I-5 overnight lane closures begin for bridge and merging lane construction

The project is completing maintenance and upgrades to I-5 between the Moda Center and Burnside Bridge to improve safety and extend the lifespan of the highway. 

This month, construction crews are working on I-5 to:

• Restripe lanes to prepare for the next stages of construction
• Install new, taller barriers that meet current traffic safety standards along the outside of the highway and in the median. These taller barriers are more resilient to impact from large trucks and better able to handle today’s traffic needs. 

To give our crews space to work, overnight lane closures on I-5 northbound and southbound will take place in January and February when weather permits. Construction on this section of I-5 is expected to continue off and on until Fall 2026.
